Trick-or-treat safety checklist

Plain and printable. Tick it off before you head out.

0 / 18 ticked

Before you go

Pick a route and a meeting spot in a public place (a park entrance, a school, a shop).
Add reflective tape or glow sticks to costumes and bags.
Pack a flashlight or headlamp for every group.
Check that masks don't block vision. Face paint is safer.
Costumes short enough not to trip on; comfortable shoes.
Write a parent's phone number inside your child's bag or on a wristband.
Optional: check the official registry at NSOPW.gov when planning your route.

On the street

An adult goes with children under 12.
Stay on sidewalks. Where there are none, walk facing traffic.
Cross at corners and crosswalks. Stop before you look at your phone.
Only visit houses with the porch light on. Never go inside a home or a car.
Stay in a group and agree on a time to head home.

Candy and allergies

Check all candy at home before eating. Throw out anything opened or homemade from strangers.
Food allergies: look for teal pumpkins, which offer non-food treats.
Watch for choking hazards (hard candy, small toys) for little kids.

If something goes wrong

Emergency: call 911.
Lost child: stay at your meeting spot and call 911 right away.
Something unsafe on a listed street? Report it; we act within 24 hours.

Trick or Treat Hours is a guide, not a safety service. In an emergency, call 911.
